The History of Washoe Golf Course

Founded in the same year our country entered World War I by renowned golf expert Mrs. Gourtley Dunn Webb, the Washoe County Golf Course has a history as storied and colorful as the city in which it resides.  Originally opened as a members-only club, Washoe turned public shortly after the depression.  This scenic venue hosted its first professional tournament in 1946 and boasts among its champions none other than the legendary Ben Hogan.  In the decades since, Washoe County Golf Course - affectionately nicknamed "The Shoe" - has undergone many changes.  But, to this day, it has held its own as one of the most beautiful, playable tracks in the Truckee Meadows, and remains a favorite for its club members, locals and visitors alike.

WCGC has been preferred venue for tournaments and outings of all sizes and statures.  From the Nevada State Amateur to small get-togethers among friends, The Shoe has always risen to the task.  Our staff can provide everything from handicapping and score sheets to barbecue facilities and beverage service.  Tee prizes, hole sponsorships, longest drive, closest-to-the-pin, raffles, putting contests - you name it, we can take care of it.  Full-service practice facilities are available, including driving range, putting green and chipping area with practice bunkers.  Not to mention the course itself, which is in its best shape in years.  The indoor grill seats over 100, the outdoor patio and covered barbecue areas can seat 220.

Our Pro Shop has recently undergone a complete remodel, and we urge you to come experience it for yourself.  Whether you're in the market for a new set of clubs, a few sleeves of balls, or just need that perfect gift, The Shoe is now the perfect place to do all of your golf-related shopping.  We carry all the latest equipment and apparel at competitive prices.  And, if we don't have what you're looking for, just ask any member of our staff and we'll order it for you.  Private and group lessons by certified PGA Professional Darin Menante (who happens to be a direct descendant of one of the club's founding members Ralph Menante) are available by appointment.  Custom club fitting and repair services are also available.
